Four Chinese companies have been formally charged in the United States with trafficking in chemicals used in the manufacture of fentanyl, a dangerous opioid, US Attorney General Merrick Garland said this Friday.
Eight employees or managers of those companies have also been charged and two of them arrested, Garland added at a press conference, stressing that the case is a “first” for US justice.
One company is accused of single-handedly “sending more than 200 kilograms of chemical precursors to the United States to produce more than 50 kilograms of fentanyl, enough to kill 25 million Americans,” he said.
