According to the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere (IPMA), this Monday and Tuesday, the island of Madeira poses an extreme risk of exposure to ultraviolet radiation (UV).
The island of Porto Santo, 18 areas of the Portuguese mainland and the Azores archipelago are showing very high levels of UV exposure this Monday and Tuesday, according to IPMA.
The UV radiation scale has five levels, ranging from extreme to low risk.
For extreme risk regions, IPMA recommends avoiding sun exposure as much as possible.
For very high-risk regions, IPMA recommends the use of UV-blocking sunglasses, a hat, a T-shirt, an umbrella, sunscreen, and keeping children out of the sun.
