A 68-year-old man was killed by a bullet to the head this Sunday in a ward located on the fifth floor of a hospital in the city of Vitoria, capital of the Brazilian state of Espírito Santo. Daniel Ribeiro Campos da Silva, who was admitted to the palliative care unit after suffering a stroke, was hit in the temple by a live projectile and died instantly in bed.
According to information provided by the Vitoria Police, late Sunday morning, criminals, allegedly drug dealers who were about to instigate some action yet to be established, pelted nails into Leão da Silva Avenue in the Gurigica area and opened fire with army rifles into the air, one of who climbed to the height of the fifth floor, went through the wall of the building and killed Daniel. Special Forces were called in, and a fierce firefight ensued between agents and criminals.
When the family of the victim called at dawn, they hardly reached the hospital, as the entire surrounding area turned into a military square, heavy artillery fire was everywhere. Until this Monday, it was not known whether the shot that killed the patient admitted to the hospital was from a police officer or a criminal.
