In Ukraine on Tuesday, house fires caused by candles, generators and gas appliances that Ukrainians install in their homes due to a power outage killed nine people, Ukraine’s emergency services said on Wednesday.
Since October, Russia has bombed Ukraine’s energy facilities en masse, causing severe damage and power outages that affect millions of Ukrainians every day.
“Just yesterday (Tuesday) there were 131 fires in Ukraine, of which 106 were in private homes. Nine people died and eight were injured,” Ukraine’s emergency services said on Facebook.
Emergency services cite “lit candles”, “gas cylinders in apartments” and “generators on balconies” as the reasons for the “increased fires and explosions”.
Ukrainians have to resort to these means to get some light or heat for many hours when they are without electricity.
At today’s meeting in Bucharest (Romania) with his colleagues from the G7, the head of the diplomatic mission of Ukraine, Dmitry Kuleba, stated the need for a quick restoration of the country’s civilian energy infrastructure.
Kuleba also reiterated his call for Kyiv’s allies to “provide Ukraine with the necessary equipment, transformers and generators to help offset damaged energy infrastructure,” an “extremely important” support, his ministry said in a statement.
Earlier in the day, US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken called Russian attacks on civilian infrastructure in Ukraine “barbaric.”
