The Spanish National Police this Thursday carried out a controlled detonation of a suspicious package found near the headquarters of the Air Force in Madrid, although no explosive materials or devices were found.
The bag, which was inside a mop bucket and wrapped in blue plastic containing court papers, including a subpoena, was found under the arches of Moncloa around 3:45 pm local time (one more than in Lisbon), according to the EFE agency. when security at Air Force Headquarters alerted the National Police.
Officials set up a security perimeter in the area, forcing them to block traffic between Princess and Isaac Peral streets, and reported the discovery to the provincial information brigade, which called in explosives experts.
After confirming that no explosive device was found in the package, the experts decided to proceed with detonating it around 17:15 (16:15 in Lisbon), according to the Ministry of the Interior, which also cited that the forensic police were also present at place for trace analysis
On Wednesday, a man was seriously injured as a result of an explosion of an artifact that was in an envelope at the Ukrainian Embassy in Madrid. Since then, Spanish authorities have identified the existence of five more explosive letters, the last of which is in the US embassy in Spain.
Rafael Pérez, the Spanish government’s secretary of state for security, said the rest of the explosive envelopes intercepted last week were sent to the prime minister, the defense minister, the satellite center and the weapons company.
The envelope sent to Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez was intercepted last week on November 24, and the rest were identified on Wednesday and Thursday.

Russia condemned this Thursday “any terrorist threat or act” following the sending of these explosive letters to Spain.

Ukrainian Ambassador to Spain Serhiy Pogoreltsev said the embassy was improving its security systems and supported declaring Russia a “terrorist state.”
