The Taiwan Ministry of Defense discovered on Monday 26 fighter jets and four warships belonging to the Chinese army in the vicinity of the island.
Nine aircraft crossed the airspace in a southwesterly direction, so the Taiwanese military monitored the situation and responded by deploying aircraft, ships and ground-based missile systems, the Taiwan Defense Ministry said on Twitter.
The escalation of tension in the region began with a trip to the island by former US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi last August, and the situation escalated after Taiwanese leader Tsai Ing-Wen visited the US, where he met with several US congressmen, despite warnings from Beijing.
