US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen arrived in Beijing this Thursday for a visit aimed at improving trade relations between the two countries destabilized by growing rivalry.
Upon arrival in the Chinese capital, Yellen was received by US Ambassador Nicholas Burns and senior Chinese Treasury official Yang Yingming, AFP reported.
The visit, scheduled before Sunday, is Janet Yellen’s first visit to China since taking office and comes a few weeks after a similar trip by US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken.
The trip had been planned for some time, but could not take place due to increased tension caused by the downing of a Chinese balloon while flying over North American territory.
According to the finance ministry, the goal is to expand exchanges between the two countries, avoid misunderstandings and increase cooperation on issues related to the global economy, climate change or the debt crisis of developing and developing countries.
On Friday, Yellen is expected to be received by Chinese Premier Li Qiang, former Deputy Prime Minister Liu He, and attend a dinner hosted by former Chinese central bank governor Zhou Xiaochuan, a senior Chinese central bank official told reporters. .
Analysts also speculate about the possibility of a meeting with China’s new vice premier, He Lifeng, who was appointed last March.
The visit, which comes amid a slow economic recovery in China and rising interest rates in North America, should allow both sides to examine existing growth prospects.
