Moscow court sentenced oligarch to 19 years in prison for embezzlement

On Thursday, a Moscow court sentenced millionaire oligarch Ziyavudin Magomedov, founder of the Summa business group, to 19 years in prison, finding him guilty of embezzlement fraud and criminal conspiracy.

The court also imposed on him a restriction of freedom of movement for a period of two years and a fine of 2.5 million rubles (about 38,900 euros). According to the Interfax news agency, Ziyavudin Magomedov was also stripped of his previous awards, such as the Order of Friendship and the Order of Honor.

The 54-year-old defendant will be placed in a maximum security prison. Magomedov made most of his fortune under President Dmitry Medvedev through the Summa company, which was responsible for the implementation of large projects, such as the construction of a stadium in Kaliningrad for the 2018 World Cup.

Later that year, he was arrested along with his older brother, who was also charged with fraud and conspiracy, although he consistently denied the charges.

The stadium in Kaliningrad called Arena Baltika has been a source of concern for World Cup organizers since its inception due to construction delays. In 2017, several employees were arrested for violations during construction work.
