Jimmy Lai’s conspiracy trial was postponed Thursday in Hong Kong after authorities asked Beijing to decide whether the founder of a closed pro-democracy newspaper could hire a foreign lawyer.
Lai, 74, faces a life sentence if found guilty under the National Security Law, which went into effect in 2020, a year after anti-government protests rocked China’s special administrative region.
On Monday, three judges in a Hong Kong court of last resort, including a descendant of Portuguese Roberto Ribeiro, denied a government request to bar Lai from hiring Timothy Owen, a British lawyer known for his human rights advocacy.
