Switzerland will begin donating to the Amazon Foundation, which receives funding from several countries to conserve forests and combat deforestation. The announcement was made by a representative of the Swiss government during the “Brazilian-Swiss Investment Forum”, which takes place in Brasilia, the federal capital of Brazil.
Guy Parmelin, a Swiss adviser for economics, education and research who participates in the Forum, said the first donations from the European country should be made “in the next few weeks.” However, he chose not to indicate either the amount of these donations or the frequency with which they would occur.
On social media, Brazil’s vice president Geraldo Alkmin, who is also minister of development, industry, trade and services, thanked Switzerland for its willingness to do its part to save the Amazon. The Amazon Foundation, whose main financiers are Norway and Germany, received 673 million euros in cash donated by the two countries a few months ago after being paralyzed for four years by Jair Bolsonaro, who wanted to use the money not to save the forest, but to as compensation to the invaders for agreeing to leave the region after its exploitation and devastation.
