An accident at a mining explosives plant in the Samara region in central Russia this Friday killed at least six people and injured two, according to Russian agencies.
“There was an explosion at the Promsintez plant in Chapaevsk. Six people were killed, two were injured, ”a representative of emergency services told the TASS state agency.
According to TASS, the explosion occurred during the “dismantling of the technical pipe”, but the fire was prevented.
The city of Chapaevsk is located about 40 kilometers from Samara, the capital of the region of the same name.
According to the company’s page on the Russian social network VK, the Promsintez plant is one of the “leading manufacturers of explosives in Russia” and the former USSR.
Promsintez produces explosives for the mining industry and employs about 1,300 people.
“The products of the plant are used […] for the exploration of oil and gas reserves and for the extraction of minerals,” the source said.
In Russia, fatal workplace accidents due to negligence or outdated equipment are common.
Many factories in Russia have been operating at full capacity since the start of the offensive in Ukraine on February 24, 2022.
