The Dutch government fell this Friday over disagreements over the asylum system after Prime Minister Mark Rutte demanded his coalition partners impose restrictions on the reunification of direct family members of war refugees.
The four parties that make up the centre-right government have been arguing for months over how to deal with the influx of refugees, but things escalated on Wednesday when Rutte put a limit of 200 family members gathered together on the table. a month and a two-year waiting period before they can travel to the Netherlands.
This proposal was deemed unfeasible by the progressive D66, but above all by the Christian Union (CU), a partner for which respect for the family is a “red line”.
