UN Secretary-General António Guterres on Tuesday expressed disappointment at the lack of consensus in the Security Council to extend the Syrian Cross-border Humanitarian Assistance Facility, which expired on Monday, his spokesman said.
“The Secretary General calls on all members of the Security Council to redouble their efforts to support the continuation of cross-border delivery of assistance to millions of people in dire need in northwest Syria for as long as possible,” Stéphane Dujarric said, adding that the UN had already foreseen such a scenario and prepared domestic assistance in advance in case of stop.
UN cross-border assistance remains “a real lifeline for millions of people in northwest Syria,” Guterres said, as humanitarian needs “have reached their highest level since the start of the conflict, and the impact of the devastating February earthquakes is still acutely felt.”
