Pilgrims with 50% discount on Sintra monuments and special schedule

Participants of World Youth Day (WYD) will receive a 50% discount on monuments in the municipality of Sintra, in the Lisbon area, as well as special visiting hours, the management company told Lusa on Wednesday.

These conditions will apply from July 24 to August 6, from 15:30 to 17:30, according to the Parques de Sintra-Monte da Lua (PSML) company in a note sent to Lusa.

“In the case of the Pena National Palace, the only national monument with an hourly “slot” system, a percentage of the entrances during this period will be reserved only for volunteers and pilgrims,” explains PSML.

The company also mentions that it will formulate and develop prevention and safety measures with Sintra’s civil protection and with national authorities to “anticipate and prevent” the significant increase in the movement of people that is expected during this period.

Lisbon has been chosen by Pope Francis for the next World Youth Day, which will take place from 1 to 6 August, with the main ceremonies in Parque Eduardo VII and Parque Tejo, north of Parque das Nasuens, on the banks of the river. Tagus, on the lands of the municipalities of Lisbon and Loures.

WYD was born at the initiative of Pope John Paul II after the success of the meeting organized in 1985 in Rome as part of the International Year of Youth.

The first meeting took place in 1986 in Rome, having already passed, in its current form, in Buenos Aires (1987), Santiago de Compostela (1989), Czestochowa (1991), Denver (1993), Manila (1995), Paris. (1997), Rome (2000), Toronto (2002), Cologne (2005), Sydney (2008), Madrid (2011), Rio de Janeiro (2013) ), Krakow (2016) and Panama (2019).

This year’s edition, which will be closed by the Pope, was originally scheduled for 2022 but was delayed due to the covid-19 pandemic.

Pope Francis was the first to register for WYD Lisbon 2023 on October 23, 2022 at the Vatican after the Angelus celebration.
