Senior Russian military officials, including Gen. Sergei Surovikin, former commander of Moscow forces in Ukraine, were arrested as part of the Wagner uprising, the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) reported today, citing sources close to the trial.
The general who commanded Russian troops in Syria and later during the invasion of Ukraine that began on February 24 last year was detained and interrogated, according to the same sources, along with other high-ranking officers who were arrested, suspended or fired.
Surovikin, known as “General Armageddon” for the bombings he undertook in Syria, has not been charged with any crime, but was allegedly aware of the mutiny plans of the leader of the Wagner mercenary group.
