The President of Angola thanked his United States of America (USA) counterpart Joe Biden on Tuesday in Luanda for the commitment to funding a solar energy project to be developed in southern Angola.
Joao Lourenço expressed his satisfaction as he spoke at the opening of the 38th International Fair in Luanda (Filda), which began on Tuesday in the capital of Angola.
According to João Lourenço, this solar energy project in Huila, Namibe, Cunene and Cuando Cubango “will change the lives of millions of Angolan citizens in rural areas, especially in these provinces.”
The head of the Angolan state stressed that on Monday he met with the president of the North American Export-Import Bank (Eximbank), Reta Jo Lewis, who is in Angola to work with the Angolan side to finance this project.
“On behalf of all Angolans, I thank President Joe Biden for his commitment, which has been critical in ensuring that this project really gets off the ground, becomes a reality, and becomes the flagship of the relationship between Angola and the United States of America,” he said. Lawrence.
The President of Angola emphasized that the African country is producing more and more electricity, mainly from clean sources, in the Baixo Kwanza basin, with energy produced in the Soyo combined cycle, in the Capanda, Cambamba, Lauca hydroelectric dams and in parks. solar farms in Biopio, Baia Farta, Benguela, Caraculo, Namibe and soon also in Lunda Sul, Lunda Norte and Moxico.
Leaving a meeting with the President of Angola, Reta Jo Lewis, quoted by the Angolan news agency Angop, said the banking institution has been working with Angola since 1942 and provided the Portuguese-speaking country with US$900 million ($832 million) in funding last June. . euros), to support the construction of two photovoltaic solar power plants.
Earlier this year, the Angolan Ministry of Finance and Eximbank signed a US$2 billion (€1.8 billion) financing deal for renewable energy production in Angola.
In 2014, this American institution signed a memorandum of understanding with the Angolan government to fund sectors such as energy, infrastructure, railroads, roads, mining, telecommunications, agriculture, building and environmental equipment, and water and sewer projects.
Through the memorandum, Eximbank has already provided financial support to Angola for the purchase of Boeing aircraft by TAAG, an Angolan airline, and two fire engines manufactured by the American company Oshkosh for Empresa Nacional de Navegação Aérea (ENNA).
