The submission of candidates for the municipal elections in Mozambique on 11 October began this Thursday in Maputo. Twenty-three parties, coalitions and citizen groups are expected to undergo scrutiny, the National Electoral Commission (CNE) has announced.
“As we announced on Monday, the nomination process for the October municipal elections has officially begun,” CNE spokesman Paulo Quinica told Lusa.
Quinica added that the team in charge of accepting applications from competitors is ready to complete their task at the Joaquim Chissano Convention Center in the Mozambican capital.
On Monday, CNE said that by the last day of registration, 14, 23 political parties, coalitions and constituency groups had officially expressed their intention to participate in the elections.
About ten million Mozambicans will elect the mayors of the country’s 65 municipalities and their respective assemblies.
In the 2018 municipal elections, Frelimo won 44 out of 53 municipalities, while the opposition won only nine.
