The mayor of Béziers, Robert Menard, has announced that the French city will make it mandatory for dogs to have a genetic passport with registered DNA.
The goal of the measure is to “fight dog filth” and to identify owners who do not clean up the feces of animals when they take them out for a walk.
According to a French newspaper Le Figaro, fines for non-compliance with the new rules range from 38 to 122 euros. However, tourists not aware of the measures will be tolerated.
“Sanctions are needed for people to behave normally,” the mayor stressed.
According to Robert Menard, municipal services collect more than a thousand dog waste per month due to the negligence of their guardians. The new measures will be tested over the next two years.
During the first three months of application, a flexible and pedagogical attitude towards non-payers is provided.
