The mayor of Setúbal, André Martins (CDU), left the Santiago Fairgrounds this Friday, accompanied by police, after a protest by firefighters-sappers that made the opening ceremony of the event impossible.
Witnesses told Lusa that, contrary to expectations, the opening ceremony did not take place due to the concentration of more than a hundred firefighters and their families who were preparing for another protest, in connection with the decision of the executive body of the city council to suspend their shift subsidy.
“There was a large concentration of firefighters and family members at the entrance to the fair, but the protests only began when they realized that, contrary to what was planned, there would be no opening ceremony,” a witness told Lusa news agency, convinced that Sadina’s local authorities decided to cancel the ceremony precisely to avoid incidents.
PSP was in the barracks all day and the commander was also booed.
