Albanian opposition leader Sali Berisha was beaten by protesters during a rally in the Albanian capital Tirana on Tuesday.
Berisha was attacked while leading a crowd of supporters of the centre-right Democratic Party of Albania to the center of Tirana for an anti-government demonstration. The protest took place a few meters from the venue of the region’s first summit of the leaders of the European Union and the Western Balkans.
The assailant was eventually beaten by supporters of the Berisha party and detained by the police.
Berisha, who was once Albania’s president and prime minister, was barred from entering the US in 2021 on suspicion of corruption, according to Reuters.
