11 people were killed when the roof of a school building in northeast China collapsed this Monday at 3:00 pm local time (7:00 am in mainland Portugal).
At the time of the disaster, the infrastructure was being used by the women’s volleyball team. According to witnesses at the scene quoted by the BBC, most of the victims are children.
Only eight of the 19 people inside the building survived. Four were pulled from the rubble, and many others managed to escape.
The authorities’ first investigations indicate that the accident may have been caused by illegal accumulation of building materials on the roof.
The police reportedly detained people associated with the construction company, according to Heilongjiang Daily.
Video on social media shows the father of one of the victims angered and concerned about his daughter’s whereabouts.
“I was told that my daughter had died, but we never saw her. All the children had blood and mud on their faces when they arrived at the hospital. I begged them to let me see my daughter. What if it’s not her?”
