Mozambique’s New Democracy Party (ND, opposition) has chosen TV presenter Younis Andrade to head the list for Maputo in the October 11 municipal elections, as announced this Monday.
After the presentation, Eunice Andrade, who has over 20 years of television experience under her belt, stressed that she would be the first woman to run for the position of head of the municipality of Mozambique’s capital.
Also running for the municipality of Maputo are Razake Manhique of the Mozambique Liberation Front (Frelimo, power), Venancio Mondlane of the Mozambique National Resistance (Renamo) and Augusto Mbazo, head of the Mozambique Democratic Movement (MDM) list, all of whom were nominated last week.
Founded in 2019 and entering the municipal election race for the first time, the ND confirmed on Saturday another 15 heads of the list of the same number of the country’s municipalities in this municipal election.
Mozambique is entering a new electoral cycle this year, with municipal elections scheduled for October 11 and general elections for 2024.
About 10 million Mozambicans will elect 65 new mayors on October 11, including 12 new municipalities that will join the 53 existing ones.
In the 2018 municipal elections, Frelimo won 44 out of 53 municipalities, Renamo, the main opposition party, won eight, and MDM was in the lead in the city of Beira.
