Mozambique recorded at least 38 victims of human trafficking in 2022 who were taken to South Africa, a neighboring country, the deputy attorney general said on Monday.
“In 2022, 38 Mozambican victims were identified who were recruited by two Mozambican nationals” for South Africa, Amabelia Chuquela said during the opening of the week in Maputo for World Day Against Trafficking in Persons on 30 July.
The official said 38 Mozambicans were recruited in Inhambane, in the south of the country, to work on a farm in South Africa, which authorities say puts disadvantaged people in a “vulnerable position.”
“This is a good way for traffickers to act,” said Eliza Samuel of the Legal and Judicial Training Center.
The Deputy Attorney General also said the country faces “enormous challenges” in identifying trafficking victims, adding that 41% of individuals identified between 2017 and 2021 fled traffickers on their own.
“The identification of victims of human trafficking is an important task, because only then can they receive the necessary support and assistance, in addition to addressing the violations from which they suffered and their social and economic reintegration,” Amabelia Ciukela stressed.
According to the prosecutor, every eight minutes in the world, from one to eight people become victims of human trafficking, with women being the main victims.
