Doctors of the Central District announced a two-day strike

Doctors in the Central Region will begin a two-day strike this Wednesday, which joins an overtime strike in primary health care that is still ongoing and a nationwide strike at the end of July.

In a statement, the Independent Physicians Union (SIM), which called the strike, deplores the restrictions it may cause, noting that it is not possible to maintain the quality and safety of care provided by the National Health Service (SNS) nor its financial sustainability by resorting to “inhuman labor doctors.”

According to the union, this strike in the Central Region will join the nationwide strike that took place at the end of July.

At the same time, from July 24 to August 22, an overtime strike is also being held in primary and inpatient healthcare.

“We were forced to participate in these strikes. We have done everything to reach an agreement that would satisfy the conditions for remuneration of doctors. And we went on strike only after the deadline of the negotiation calendar on June 30,” the SIM said in a statement.

The union also points to “years of not investing” and “government insensitivity”, stressing that “only after a nationwide strike” did the guardianship submit a written proposal for negotiation.

“SNS is worse. Consequently, the Portuguese are forced to spend their meager savings in order to gain access to the health care enshrined in the Constitution,” said SIM, insisting: “These strikes are a wake-up call for the collapse of the SNA.” .

SIM has also planned an all-out strike of medical trainees on August 23 and 24, which will cover all Portuguese services and institutions where these medical workers work. There will be a minimum of services for this stop.

According to SIM, the aim of the strike is to force the government to “respond effectively to the union’s book of demands” and to force the finance and health ministers to submit a proposal for a wage scale “that restores career losses accumulated by the inflationary erosion of the last decade” and positions “with honor and justice » the entire medical class, including internists, in a single public service remuneration table.
