Christopher Nolan’s film topped the $550 million mark at the worldwide box office and officially became the highest-grossing World War II film of all time.
In accordance with Independentand according to the latest Box Office Mojo predictions, “Oppenheimer” surpassed the previous record holder, “Dunkirk,” also directed by Christopher Nolan, which grossed $527 million (about 480 million euros) at the worldwide box office.
Despite the impressive numbers, Oppenheimer is falling behind in the Barbenheimer battle as Greta Gerwig’s Barbie has made over a billion dollars (over 900 million euros) in the same time frame.
In an interview with Independent, Christopher Nolan has stated that Oppenheimer is the greatest film he has ever made. “The movie I wanted to make couldn’t be scaled down,” Nolan said. “It’s not about the money, it’s not about the budget – I was attracted by the scale of the story. The fact that Oppenheimer and his fellow scientists could not completely rule out the possibility of igniting the atmosphere and destroying the entire world, but even thus launching the test is the idea that someone is taking this risk on behalf of all of us and all of our descendants . There is nothing higher than that,” the director said.
