Ukraine’s Verkhovna Rada (parliament) on Wednesday approved a proposal calling on foreign governments and parliaments not to recognize the elections that the Russian authorities intend to organize in the partially occupied separatist regions.
Russia has turned its electoral system “into a tool to justify armed aggression against a neighboring country and legalize the illegal annexation of occupied territories on a temporary basis, as well as to weaken confidence in democratic institutions,” the petition says, and with reference to Donetsk, Lugansk, Kherson and Zaporozhye areas.
The text calls on states and international organizations not to recognize the legitimacy of the elections scheduled for September 10, or any state body with elected representatives in the process.
