This Friday, NCIS intercepted a boat carrying 11 migrants in the Mediterranean off the Italian island of Pantelleria as part of Operation Frontex THEMIS.
The Maritime Police said in a statement that units of the Portuguese security forces on a mission in Italy intercepted the vessel off Pantelleria Island after an alert from the local coordination center at 09:25.
“On arrival at the scene, the NCIS intercepted the vessel with 11 people on board who were without life jackets and showed signs of dehydration and fatigue,” he adds.
11 people were rescued and taken to the port of Pantelleria, where the Italian authorities were waiting for them.
Since June 14, the Maritime Police has been participating in the joint operation “THEMIS” of the European agency Frontex with a mission to control and monitor the Italian and external maritime borders of the European Union in the fight against cross-border crime.
