Montenegro pushes for e-voting to facilitate diaspora participation in elections

This Saturday, the PSD leader pushed for the need to implement e-voting in Portugal to make it easier for those outside the country to vote in a scenario where fewer and fewer people vote.

“We cannot wait forever for the momentum that is inevitable. I know that we have to guarantee the reliability of the vote, that we have to guarantee that the will of the people is not falsified, but we are already relying on many technologies for many things as or more important than that,” he said.

Luis Montenegro spoke at the PSD Portuguese Communities Summer Meeting, held at a hotel in Albufeira, Faro District, attended by community representatives from Canada, South Africa, France, Belgium, Switzerland, the United Kingdom and Brazil.

According to the leader of the Social Democratic Party, after the failure in Parliament of the proposal to introduce electronic voting without face-to-face, the party included in its draft constitutional revision the possibility of enshrining the electoral law in Portugal.

“The country should look at this and should look at it first of all because fewer and fewer people are participating in political life,” he stressed, adding that there should be “adjustment in the representation of communities” in electoral acts.

For the SDP president, the process, which was not agreed upon, was also opposed by the PS, which, according to Luis Montenegro, “wants the communities to be sent” to see if it “controls them better” because “the fewer there are, the easier it is to control “

Luis Montenegro also said that Portugal should prepare for the next European elections, which will be held on June 9, 2024, a date that has been criticized because in the case of Portugal it is the eve of the Dia de Portugal holiday and coincides with a long weekend.

“The country must prepare for this day and is preparing itself. We, at least, apparently, will ensure the mobility of voting, that is, we will be able to vote not only in the place of our residence, but also in the place where we were found,” he said.

But, he lamented, “there must have been some kind of election planned in Europe that took place on a day that was actually problematic for the country” to take this step, otherwise it would not have happened.

“We want the country to be able to take these steps without pants in hand, at the last minute, to solve a pressing problem,” he stressed.
