The MPLA Parliamentary Group, the ruling party, this Monday reaffirmed its leader’s “unconditional support”, guaranteeing “loud and clear” that there will be no dismissal of the President of the Republic, João Lourenço.
The position was expressed during the reading of political declarations by the leader of the parliamentary group of the Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA) Virgilio de Fontes Pereira.
“The MPLA Parliamentary Group reaffirms here and now its unconditional support for President João Lourenço and declares loud and clear that there will be no resignation of the President of the Republic, João Manuel Gonçalves Lourenço, democratically elected by the majority of Angolans, period,” said Fontes Pereira.
This is an initiative presented at the end of July by the National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA), the largest opposition party, to remove the President of the Republic, claiming that Joao Lourenço “undermined the democratic process in the country and strengthened the authoritarian regime that threatens the world.”
According to the leader of the MPLA parliamentary group, in recent years the political discussion “has turned into a fruitless discussion marked by constant incidents between activists of political parties”, considering that “without a doubt, UNITA” is primarily responsible for the atmosphere of political tension that exists”.
<< Motivated by speeches that incite hatred and division, yet notorious on their political agenda, the lack of clear goals and ideas based on the assumption of Angolanism, is able to unite Angolan men and women in continuing to build a future of social justice, progress and well-being for everyone," he said.
Virgilio de Fontes Pereira emphasized that the MPLA remains focused “on the consolidation of peace, on the daily manifestation of the spirit of tolerance, reconciliation and forgiveness of all Angolans, since the MPLA considers peace to be the highest good that must be preserved.”
“It is high time for us politicians, in particular the deputies of the National Assembly, to focus our actions on the discussion of ideas, and not resurrect ghosts, in particular the ghost of fraud and the ghost of the alleged illegitimacy of institutions,” he stressed, calling for the specter of war “not to be used as throwing weapons” that “has nothing to do with any insinuations to ignore the past.”
For the MPLA parliamentary group, a party like its opponent “has party power, destruction and conspiracy” and “has no calling to exercise power”.
“Because he is currently resorting to all kinds of tricks, including slandering the country abroad, with international institutions, in a vain attempt to tarnish the image of Angola, its president and its executive, in order to damage its reputation,” Fontes Pereira said.
The deputy urged the youth not to fall “in the hands of those who, with false promises and crafty speeches, taking advantage of the difficulties” with which they live, “instrumentalizes them to achieve their political goals, even if by unconstitutional ways” .
