The chief of staff of the NATO Secretary General said this Wednesday that Ukraine could cede territory to Russia to facilitate its entry into the North Atlantic Alliance, which the Ukrainian authorities have already considered unacceptable.
“I think that one of the solutions for Ukraine could be to cede territory and get NATO membership in return. I’m not saying that this should be the case, but this is a possible solution,” Stian Jenssen said at a political forum in Norway.
At the same time, he stressed that Ukraine must decide “when and under what conditions it wants to negotiate.”
“There are significant advances in the issue of Ukraine’s future membership in NATO. It is in the interests of everyone that the war does not happen again,” he said.
According to the Norwegian newspaper VG, Jenssen said that Russia “was suffering a lot from a military point of view” and “seems unrealistic” that it can get more territory, pointing out that the question is “what Ukraine can recover.”
However, the Ukrainian authorities have already considered the proposal of a high-ranking official of the Atlantic Alliance unacceptable.
“The fact that a NATO representative supports the narrative of territorial surrender is absolutely unacceptable and supports Russia’s position,” Ukrainian Foreign Ministry spokesman Oleg Nikolenko said, quoted by Ukrinform.
