A mob of Muslims reacted Wednesday to accusations that a Christian had desecrated the Koran in eastern Pakistan by destroying his home, setting fire to churches and damaging several homes, police and local Christians said.
While there were no immediate reports of casualties, the level of violence prompted the Pakistani government to send more police forces to the area and deploy the army to restore order.
The attacks in Jaranwal, Faisalabad district, Punjab province, began after some Muslims living in the area said they saw a local Christian, Raju Amir, and his friend tearing sheets from a copy of the Koran. and throw them on the ground and write offensive comments on other pages.
