Hurricane Hillary, which will hit southern California on Sunday, has forced measures such as canceling sporting events or putting local airports on alert.
Hilary, which peaks at 185 kilometers per hour this Saturday, will hit the Mexican coast of Baja California early Sunday and continue northwest toward southern California in the afternoon and evening of the same day, according to a bulletin from the National Center US hurricanes (NHC) quotes Efe.
The weather center is warning of the threat of flooding in these regions until Monday, while authorities in southern California counties such as Los Angeles and Orange continue to distribute sandbags and urge the public to take precautions.
“This is another example of climate change. Therefore, we must be prepared for weather events that we are not used to. Stay safe,” said Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass.
Local weather services have warned that Hilary could cause rainfall accumulations of up to five centimeters in coastal areas and up to 20 centimeters in the mountainous and desert areas of San Diego County.
In anticipation of Hilary’s arrival, Major League Baseball (MLB) has been forced to postpone three games scheduled for Sunday in Southern California, including the Dodgers’ game against the Miami Marlins that was scheduled to take place this Saturday afternoon.
Similarly, Sunday night games between local football teams LA Galaxy and LAFC were postponed.
National parks such as Death Valley and Mojave have also been closed as an emergency measure, and even SpaceX has delayed a rocket launch carrying satellites from California.
Airlines are asking passengers to be aware of possible changes or cancellations of flights to or from Los Angeles International Airport and other Southern California terminals, and are offering flight changes without penalty.
