In Nîmes, in southeastern France, a child was killed and an adult was injured after the car they were traveling in was shot at, authorities said, admitting it was “payback.”
French police indicated that the attack may have taken place in the context of conflicts between drug trafficking groups.
The shootings were recorded at 11:00 pm (in Lisbon an hour behind) on Monday in the Pissevin district, a place known as a common drug-dealing site in Nîmes, where other acts of violence had already taken place.
According to the authorities, the car, which was driven by a resident of the microdistrict, in which two underage nephews were also traveling, was fired upon while preparing for parking.
The fatal victim, a 10-year-old boy, was hit when he tried to run out of the car.
French news portal Act 17 writes that cell phone footage shows the assailant armed with a shotgun before fleeing in a car driven by an accomplice.
The car used by the attackers was later found destroyed by fire.
A police source quoted Information about France indicated, however, that several witnesses saw at least four attackers.
The injured driver took the car to the hospital, where his nephew eventually died.
As a result of the shots, the driver of the downed car was wounded in the back.
French Interior Minister (equivalent to Interior Ministry) Gérard Darmanin wrote on social media X that “the facts appear to have been a settling of scores between traffickers.”
“This is a big drama that will not go unpunished,” the minister said, recalling that “the police have made several arrests in recent weeks and will increase their presence” in Nîmes.
