Spain’s King Felipe on Tuesday nominated the leader of the conservative People’s Party (PP), Alberto Nunez Feijoo, in an upcoming parliamentary vote for the post of prime minister, Francine Armengol, chairwoman of the Chamber of Deputies, said.
According to Reuters, the king, who is head of state, made the decision after consulting with representatives of the parties that won seats in parliament on July 23 to find out who they would support in voting for office.
No party or bloc won an absolute majority of seats in the early general elections. The Feihoo NP won the most seats with 137 and currently enjoys the support of more than 35 MPs, including 172 MPs from the far-right Vox party.
Feihoo will need the support of 176 of the 350 members in the House to win the premiership, or a simple majority of more votes in favor than against, in the second ballot. If he loses again, the king will have to choose a new candidate.
Acting Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said he intends to seek the support of the Chamber of Deputies for a new term.
If no candidate wins a majority within two months of the first vote, a new election will be called.
The King of Spain justified the nomination of the President of the People’s Party as a candidate for Prime Minister, as he received the most votes in the election and there was not a “sufficient majority” at the moment to support another name.
Felipe VI stressed in his statement that the candidate of the party that received the most votes in the Spanish legislative elections was always the first one proposed by the head of state to parliament as a candidate for the post of prime minister.
“This practice has become a tradition over the years” and in consultation with the parties that won parliamentary representation in the July 23 elections, the King of Spain “did not find that today there is a sufficient majority for an investiture that would allow this custom to fall” , the Spanish royal house said in a statement.
