General Sergei Surovikin, commander of the Russian Aerospace Forces and known for his closeness to the leader of the Wagner mercenary group Yevgeny Prigozhin, has been removed from his post, according to the Russian daily RBC, informed by a source of his resignation.
“He is currently on a short vacation,” one source told a Russian newspaper, while a second source said that Surovikin had been fired by the Russian Ministry of Defense, a decision that is not officially known.
Surovikin, 56, known as “General Armageddon” for bombing Syria, will also automatically step down as deputy commander of Russian forces operating in Ukraine as part of the invasion that began in February 2022.
