PSD leader Luis Montenegro said this Wednesday that the visit of the President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Souza, to Ukraine expresses “the solidarity and feelings of the Portuguese people.”
“There is no doubt that the President of the Republic, expressing the solidarity of the Portuguese people, interprets the feelings of the people, our respect and, finally, our emotions, our heart that accompanies all those who suffer. every day unbearable attacks on their lives and their heritage,” said the Social Democrat during a visit to Santo Antão da Barca in Alfandega da Fe, Bragança district.
This Wednesday, Marcelo Rebelo de Souza began a two-day visit to Kyiv (Ukraine) from Poland, where he was on an official visit.
Luis Montenegro admitted that he did not have “a single millimeter of doubt” on whose side he was, and stated that all efforts to achieve peace that could be made by the authorities of each of the countries involved and international organizations should be “deepened as much as possible.”
“I believe that the President of the Republic, as the highest judge of the country, very well interprets the feelings of the entire Portuguese people who came to Ukraine to express all the solidarity, all the help that the Portuguese people, the Portuguese institutions, the sovereignty that Portugal has granted to the oppressed people who are under constant threat for more than a year and a half,” he stressed.
Russia’s invasion of Ukraine “does not comply with any rules, neither from the point of view of international law, nor from the point of view of the most important thing – respect for human rights,” he stressed.
According to the SDP President, the violation of the fundamental rights of the civilian population, which marked this conflict in Ukraine, cannot leave anyone in doubt.
The President of the Republic said that he was in Kyiv to continue the presence of Portugal and show solidarity with Ukraine, as well as to take part in the celebration of Independence Day on Thursday.
“The goal is multiple. First, it is the continuation of the Portuguese presence. Prime Minister, President of the Assembly of the Republic, Minister of Foreign Affairs several times, now the President of the Republic has arrived. Show your solidarity in all domains,” Marcelo Rebelo de Souza said shortly after disembarking at the Kyiv-Pasazhyrsky railway station.
