This morning, the navy seized a ship 93 kilometers south of Faro, suspected of being involved in drug trafficking and crewed by two Spanish nationals, the armed forces said in a statement.
According to the disclosure, “The Lisbon Maritime Search and Rescue Coordination Center received information that a vessel with two people on board was drifting 50 nautical miles, equivalent to approximately 93 kilometers, south of Faro.”
“Upon arrival, it was determined that two people of Spanish nationality, aged 26 and 27, were on board, undocumented, not in need of medical attention, with a suspicion that the ship may be associated with drug trafficking activities.
The Navy transported the vessel and crew to the Faro Maritime Police Local Command for identification.
“The ship is in the custody of the Maritime Police, since it was not possible to prove the registration of the crew,” the message says.
The action involved the ship NRP Cassiopeia and “two high-speed vessels, one of the local command of the Faro Maritime Police, and the other of the Navy, operated by the marines.”
While the statement said the action was a “priority maritime search and rescue mission,” the statement added that the Maritime Authorities and the Navy “continue to carry out anti-drug-trafficking missions in the Algarve, having completed 63 arrests since the beginning of the year and capture of 27 speedboats with about 30 tons of drugs.
