Metropolitano de Lisboa is investing a total of 13.75 million euros in upgrading, accessing and replacing the mechanical equipment (stairs and elevators) in the stations, with 11 elevators and 26 “escalators” currently out of service.
In a statement released this Thursday, the company clarified that it has an ongoing program to “improve accessibility and modernize the mechanical equipment existing at network stations,” as part of the National Plan to Promote Accessibility, with the aim of achieving the principle of “Accessibility and mobility for all.” .
The Metro de Lisboa network has 117 elevators, 234 escalators and 10 moving walkways, according to the company.
According to Metro, 11.1% of escalators and 9.4% of elevators are “immobilized due to breakdowns and are in the process of being repaired”, that is, 26 escalators and 11 elevators.
“Troubleshooting of this equipment is a priority for this company, and a number of measures are developed daily to ensure the availability and safety of customers,” the note says.
Modernization and/or replacement works currently underway, totaling €5.85 million, are being carried out at Baixa Chiado, Campo Grande, Alameda I and II, Carnida and Pontinha stations.
The Baixa-Chiado station is undergoing a modernization and replacement of the mechanical stairs with an investment of 1.5 million euros, with completion scheduled for the end of 2023.
The modernization and replacement of the elevator is also planned, works scheduled to start on October 12 and be completed in February 2024, with an investment of 323,000 euros.
At Campo Grande, work is ongoing to modernize and replace the escalators at a cost of 2.9 million euros and is expected to be completed by the end of the year.
For the Alameda I and II stations, the replacement of the five elevators will start on September 5, with an investment of one million euros and is expected to be completed by the end of the year.
Escalators are being maintained at Carnide and Pontinha stations, with an investment of €55,500 and €74,000 respectively, with completion scheduled for late September and October.
Work is also planned to improve access to Campo Pequeno, Picoas, Martim Moniz and Intendente stations, totaling 7.9 million euros, ensuring that these stations also have full accessibility.
