A Belarusian court on Thursday sentenced a well-known journalist to three and a half years in prison for “assisting extremist activities” and “discrediting Belarus” by providing data to a human rights organization, the Association of Journalists of Belarus reported.
Larisa Shchirakova, 50, convicted in a closed court in the city of Gomel, will serve her sentence in a strict regime colony and will have to pay a fine of 3,500 Belarusian rubles (about 1,000 euros).
The Belarusian authorities detained her in December 2022 and first placed her son in a state orphanage, and then transferred custody of the child to the journalist’s ex-husband.
