China admitted this Wednesday that it has “on-duty police stations” abroad, but denied that it has carried out “policing” as condemned by human rights groups, including in Portugal, accusing Beijing of persecuting dissidents abroad.
A Chinese foreign ministry spokesman acknowledged that Beijing “maintains a network of on-duty police stations” overseas, but stressed that “underground police stations” do not exist, which is also condemned by third countries such as Germany.
The stations were set up by “groups of passionate overseas Chinese” and run by “volunteers committed to the Chinese diaspora, not Chinese policemen,” the spokesman said.
