The abolition of the rental of electric scooters in Paris, which was decided in April in a referendum, came into force this Friday, the day the French government also tightened the rules for the use of this mode of transport in the country.
There were an estimated 15,000 electric scooters on the streets of Paris, operated by companies such as Lime, Dott and Tier, whose operating contracts expired on September 1.
The renewal of the bonds was the subject of a citizen vote in April, with 89% of participants voting against, although less than 08% of voters voted.
The city council, led by Socialist President Anna Hidalgo, nevertheless accepted the result after 2022, in which scooters (rented or private) were involved in 459 accidents that killed three people and injured 426, twice as many as in 2019. According to the municipality.
The disappearance of this means of rental mobility in Paris (private vehicles are still allowed) coincided with the publication by the government of President Emmanuel Macron of a measure that tightens conditions for the use of these vehicles.
The Ministry of the Interior, which is in charge of transport, has raised the minimum age for driving scooters from 12 to 14 and tightened sanctions for “risky behavior” of users, the guardianship agency said Friday.
It was also established that the carriage of another passenger on one of these vehicles is punishable by a fine of 135 euros instead of the previous 35 euros.
Penalties have also been increased for driving on certain off-limits roads, such as using car lanes when there is a bike lane.
Tours are not included in the tightening of sanctions, as 135 euros have already been punished for their use.
The increase in the age of using electric scooters comes after a 12-year-old girl who was driving one in Chessy, east of Paris, died Wednesday when she was hit by a car while crossing a zebra crossing.
