India launched a rocket with the first satellite to study the Sun.

This Saturday, India launched a solar probe rocket for a four-month journey to the sun. The moment was broadcast live by the Indian Space Research Organization which is promoting the mission. The Aditya-L1 satellite will be located at a distance of 1.5 million kilometers from Earth.

After the rocket took off just in time from the launch site on the island of Sriharikota in southern India, flight control technicians applauded.

The launch comes just over a week after India landed a robotic probe on the moon’s south pole, an unprecedented achievement in space exploration.

More than 860,000 viewers watched the broadcast, according to Reuters.

Aditya, which means “Sun” in Hindi, will record solar activity, in particular the dynamics of solar winds (the continuous ejection of subatomic particles from the solar corona) and their impact on space weather.
