The Special Representative of the United Nations (UN) Secretary-General for West Africa on Tuesday called on all political players for peace and the creation of a new legal framework in Guinea-Bissau.
Leonardo Santos Simão ended a two-day visit to the African country at the National People’s Assembly on Tuesday and ended up highlighting a “very positive path” but also warning “of the challenges ahead.” and who “need a very purposeful delivery”.
The first recommendation was addressed specifically to “all parliamentary collegiums so that the country has a government program and budget” and that they take up “other legislative aspects”, namely the revision of the Constitution.
These issues are already on the agenda of the Parliament, and the representative of the UN Secretary General said that he received information from all political forces that “there is a commitment to peace and stability.”
“This is a condition for national development, so I leave here very encouraged, very impressed with this commitment, which I have gathered not only with each political party individually, but also here together, under the leadership of the Deputy President (of the Assembly),” he said.
The visit began on Monday with a meeting with the President of the Republic, Umaro Sissoko Embalo, who conveyed to him “the readiness to continue to lead the country so that Guinea-Bissau returns to constitutional normality, is a respectable country and at the same time attractive.” for investment.”
“And also at the level of political forces, I found this rapprochement, this understanding that peace and stability are a prerequisite for solving other problems,” he added.
Leonardo Santos Simão also met with the local international community, namely the diplomatic community, “who also expressed their readiness to continue to support the country in solving some of the problems it faces, especially in the social sphere.”
“But working to help the country create a more attractive legal framework for domestic and foreign investment is, in fact, the basis for finally addressing national problems and challenges,” he said.
He left a message to the people of Guinea to “continue with united and dedicated efforts to encourage political forces to engage their members in the search for solutions to national problems.”
The UN Special Representative was received at the National People’s Assembly by Vice President Fernando Diaz, who noted the willingness of the international community to “accompany this new phase” of Guinea-Bissau.
Fernando Diaz asked the United Nations to “play an important role in stabilizing the country” which “needs the support of the international community as the financial situation is not the best.”
He also took the opportunity to ask the Secretary-General of the United Nations to follow up on those arrested on 1 February in the coup attempt, who remain in prison without trial, which he warned “could create unrest in national unity”.
The Vice President also expressed concern about the upheavals taking place in West Africa and asked the UN Secretary General to “give priority to the debate among people in conflict.”
“Only through debate can we overcome all differences, any other way, any other means will not help us,” he said.
