The death toll from floods and hurricanes that hit parts of Greece, Turkey and Bulgaria has risen to eight since Tuesday, according to official sources.
In recent hours, rescue teams have discovered the body of a hiker who disappeared after being swept away by a flood that devastated a campsite in northwestern Turkey, bringing the death toll to eight across three countries.
Flooding at a campsite near the border with Bulgaria washed away houses and huts.
Hundreds of homes and workplaces in various areas of Istanbul, Turkey’s largest city, were also flooded during the hurricanes, which have been ongoing since Tuesday.
At least five people died, three at a campsite and two in Istanbul, according to authorities.
Rescuers are still looking for three people missing at the same campsite.
Among the victims in Istanbul is “a 32-year-old citizen of Guinea (country not specified) who was locked in the basement of an apartment in the low-income district of Kuchukcekmece,” Turkish broadcaster HaberTurk TV reported.
Another victim was a 57-year-old woman who died after she was swept away by a flood in another district of Istanbul, private news agency DHA reported.
According to preliminary data, the flood waters affected more than 1,750 homes and businesses in the city, the Istanbul Governor’s Office said.
In Greece, heavy rain on Tuesday left at least one dead near the central city of Volos, and at least five people are missing.
According to firefighters, the man died as a result of the collapse of the wall.
In Bulgaria, the storm caused flooding on the southern Black Sea coast, killing two people.
Three more are missing.
TV footage shows cars and caravans being swept out to sea in the resort town of Tsarevo in southern Bulgaria.
Authorities declared a state of emergency in the city and urged people, especially tourists, to take shelter on the upper floors of buildings as water flooded the first floors of some hotels.
