Portuguese authorities arrested six people at dawn this Thursday in an operation in which they seized 1.6 tons of hashish and a high-speed vessel in international waters, 93 kilometers southeast of Portugal, as announced today.
A joint operation by the National Maritime Administration, the Navy and the Air Force also resulted in the confiscation of six fuel canisters, as well as 46 bales of hashish and a ship, according to the release.
“Six male crew members of Moroccan and Spanish nationality, aged between 21 and 48, who were sent ashore and went through the necessary procedures for their identification and subsequent legal formalities, were also detained.”
Two vessels participated in the operation: one belonged to the Marine Police, the other to the Marine Corps, as well as a Navy ship and an Air Force aircraft.
As part of measures to combat drug trafficking in the south of the country, the Portuguese authorities have since the beginning of the year arrested 78 people and confiscated 32 speedboats with about 33 tons of drugs, the report said.
