This is the fourth time the US Coast Guard has intercepted Reza Baluchi, a 44-year-old marathon runner who is trying to operate a contraption that looks like a giant hamster wheel. This time, the man was detained by authorities about 110 kilometers from Tybee Island, Georgia on August 26. He intended to cross the Atlantic and reach the United Kingdom. All flights ended with the intervention of the Coast Guard.
“Based on the condition of the vessel, which was afloat due to cables and buoys, agents [da Guarda Costeira dos EUA] established that Baluchi was making a manifestly unsafe journey,” the criminal statement, cited BBC.
According to authorities, during the last voyage, the man refused to leave the ship for three days. They said the man refused to leave the ferris wheel and threatened to commit suicide.
According to court documents, Baluchi also claimed to have had a bomb on board.
On September 1, he surrendered and left the ship. He was taken to the coast guard base in Miami. Authorities later determined that the “bomb” was a fake.
This was not Baluchi’s first arrest for attempting to operate a vessel he calls a “bubble”. In 2021, he was arrested after being rescued while trying to travel from Florida to New York.
In 2014, he had to be rescued off St. Augustine Island, and two years later he had to be rescued again off the coast of Jupiter, near Palm Beach, Florida.
