Mozambican police have arrested a man suspected of trying to smuggle a teenager in Maputo to South Africa, a neighboring country, a corporate source told Lusa this Friday.
“He [o detido] claims he wanted to find a job for the teenager in South Africa,” said Carminia Leite, spokesperson for the Police of the Republic of Mozambique (PRM) in Maputo province.
The suspect took the 15-year-old to the Namaacha area without her family’s permission, police said, adding that they “did not have passports” and “intended to trespass.”
The suspect was arrested on Sunday following an anonymous tip, Carminia Leite added.
According to the latest data from Mozambique’s Attorney General’s Office, there were at least 38 victims of human trafficking in Mozambique who were trafficked to South Africa in 2022.
According to the prosecutor’s office, every eight minutes around the world, between one and eight people become victims of human trafficking, with the main victims being women.
