The chief adviser to the head of state of Ukraine, Mykhailo Podolyak, this Friday asked Romania to show more firmness in the face of Russia in order to prevent Moscow’s forces from attacking the country with weapons.
Podolyak said he “does not expect” NATO to declare war on Russia over the crash of an unmanned aerial vehicle (“drone”) on Romanian territory, but asked Bucharest to stand firm in the face of Russia to ensure a similar situation does not happen again.
“Perhaps it’s worth emphasizing even more firmly that violating airspace is unacceptable,” Podolyak wrote on the X social network.
An aide to the Ukrainian president suggested a “possible reaction” from Romania, a NATO member, and other Atlantic Alliance countries bordering Ukraine.
“For example, they may say they are willing to shoot down drones and missiles at a certain distance to protect their borders,” he added.
“Nobody expects NATO to invoke Article 05 and declare war on Russia because a piece of metal fell on Romanian territory,” he said.
However, Podolyak said that silence about incidents like the one that occurred last Monday in the border zone between Ukraine and Romania means that “Russia is using the airspace” of neighboring countries to “carry out missile attacks” on Ukrainian territories .
According to Kyiv authorities, Russian missiles have crossed the borders or airspace of Romania, Poland and Moldova several times since February 2022.
