TAP’s decision to increase flights to Morocco after Friday’s earthquake will remain in effect until Monday on flights to Marrakech and Casablanca as demand was “high”, the company said.
The flights are in “high demand”, prompting TAP to decide “to also increase the number of flights tomorrow, Monday”, with two flights to Marrakech and two flights to Casablanca, an official airline source said.
In just two days, TAP is expected to transport about 1,500 people.
The carrier announced Saturday it would double the number of seats on today’s flights to Marrakech and Casablanca in Morocco, planning to carry 616 passengers on three scheduled flights.
For Sunday flights to Marrakech, TAP has decided to switch from an Embraer 190 and 195 to two Airbus A321s, each capable of carrying 221 people, for a total of 442 passengers.
In addition to these two flights, TAP has also increased the number of flights to Casablanca operated by Airbus A320, which will increase the number of passengers from 118 to 174.
TAP’s decision follows an earthquake that rocked the North African country on Friday evening, causing 2,000 deaths and more than 2,000 injuries, according to Morocco’s interior ministry.
The earthquake, whose epicenter was recorded in the city of Isis, 63 kilometers southwest of the city of Marrakesh, was felt in Portugal and Spain, reaching a magnitude of 7.0 on the Richter scale, according to the National Institute of Geophysics of Marrakech. .
The US Geological Survey (USGS) recorded the earthquake’s magnitude as 6.8.
