Ian Wilmut, leader of the team that raised Dolly the sheep, has died

Scientist Ian Wilmut died this Monday at the age of 79, according to the University of Edinburgh, where he was a professor. The Briton led the team that created Dolly the sheep, the first animal cloned from an adult cell.

The discovery marked Wilmut’s career and sparked debate about the future of cloning. The scientist called the human cloning hypothesis “disgusting,” adding that his work “has nothing to do with copying people.”

Dolly was named after singer Dolly Parton. The ewe eventually gave birth six times before being slaughtered in 2003. Her body was donated to the National Museum of Scotland.

In 2006, Wilmut was appointed director of the Center for Regenerative Medicine at the University of Edinburgh. He retired in 2012 and in 2018 revealed that he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. The causes of his death have not yet been announced.
